für Violoncello und Orchester-Schnittke’s first cello concerto was written during a near fatal time in his life after having suffered a severe stroke in 1985 during which his heart stopped three times. Upon recovery he completed the concerto the music becoming more dissonant and discordant with the melodies more contorted. The first cello concerto was a monumental endeavor for large orchestra and approximately 40 minutes in duration. The work was written for Schnittke’s close friend Russian cellist Natalia Gutman. The solo part is most feverish and virtuosic exhausting the performer both technically and emotionally. The last fourth movement creates an unusual structuralprogression ending in what feels like a celestial hymn-like prayer. Schnittke himself said: Suddenly I was given this finale from somewhere and I’ve just written it down . Available here is the study score for Schnittke’s emotionally and technically demanding Cello Concerto No.1 . This Sikorski edition study score is well presented and provides an excellent resource for study or perusal use.

The power of this bright fanfare reflects the optimism joy and commitment to tradition that the people of the Italian town of Schlanders have deep within their souls. The golden trumpets from the valleys of South Tyrol echo across the mountains on both sides of the Austrian-Italian border and help to convey the composer's message: just as the sun shines on all parts of the world music knows no boundaries. This message echoes throughout this brilliant fanfare.

This composition is based on a passacaglia theme in which artistic perfection symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the Symphonic Variations are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan himself originally an organist took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to amusical adventure in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.
