Three Short Pieces for Woodwind was composed in 2004 as an entry for the 60x60 competition organised by Vox Novus who were looking to promote 60 pieces each lasting no more than 60 seconds. As part of the competition selection process the ThreePieces were broadcast on WBAR Radio New York in August 2004. Subsequently Nocturne (the second of the pieces) was chosen for performance in various European concerts organised by Vox Novus. The obvious challenge in composing these pieces wasfinding a way of stating an idea and developing it within the span of one minute. For the first piece I adopted a neo-Baroque style writing a fairly strict fugue complete with stretto pedal point etc. The second piece is a complete contrast tothe first exploiting long sustained melodic lines. The final piece is different again making use of almost percussive rhythms and assymetric time signatures. Opening Showpiece- Entry of the Celts is a delightful light concert opener. As its title implies this work features Celtic-inspired music. All the instruments in the band are given the opportunity to display their most beautiful sound colours: from the bass section to the cornets via the tenor horns euphoniums/baritones and trombones. Each section plays a solo passage accompanied by percussion instruments. The solo for soprano cornet leads to a sparkling and impressive finale. A wonderful Celtic work that will enchant and delight your audiences.

‘Spirit of Independence’ was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare ‘Onafhankelijkheid’ (‘Independence’) from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. Jan Van der Roost has used these facts in the dynamic concert piece ‘Spirit of Independence’: a chorale-like middle section is surrounded by music bubbling full of energy.

Weeping and screaming she searched for her losthusband Odur. Power and justice are the main ideas portrayed by Kevin Houben in this lyrical concert work.

In 1979 Tozzi released his Gloria which was a great success on the continent before in 1982 hitting a global market following an English version by the phenomenal young American vocalist Laura Brannigan.
