While the value of authenticity in the performance of Baroque music is now widely appreciated many players still feel daunted by the task of realising the unadorned melodies and basses of Corelli’s Op.5 Violin Sonatas in their original form. Fortunately Gustav Jensen’s edition of these works provides an ideal solution to the problem. Carefully fingered and bowed with the continuo sensitively arranged for harpsichord or modern piano it presents the notated elements of a spirited and musically satisfying reading while still leaving room for performers to shape their own interpretation. This volume includes sonatas No.7 and No.10 – both composed on the sonata dacamera pattern – and the celebrated La folia variations with which Corelli concluded his collection. Bach’s nine-movement Magnificat (1749) the first great vocal work from his Berlin years is among the most magnificent sounding in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the “Hymn to the Virgin Mary” (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur dignity polyphonic and concertante choral movements sensitive (“empfindsam”) and expressive arias a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.) which is almost one hour in duration would be well suited for example as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concertprogramme. This work depicts the overwhelming enthusiasm joy and vitality that is prevalent in many concert bands. Following a solemn opening the piece builds until we hear the first highly energetic theme. The middle section seeks to emphasise the close bond and the deeper values which unify the members of the band. In the final section the energetic atmosphere of the beginning returns leading to a strong intense conclusion. Be careful this piece is very contagious!
