Avant-garde when it was written (in the 70's) this spooky piece for advanced groups uses massed whispers and strange tones as well as more traditional techniques to create a melodramatic effect. It definitely stretches the limits for chorus and audience.

This choral prayer was one of the winners of the 2006 Chanticleer Student Choral Composition Competition. For mixed divisi voices a cappella the serene work is harmonically lush and true to the text.

The harmonic model for this piece is based on a subdivision of pitches in primary and secondary notes in principle any chord can be viewed from it's structural qualities including interval content and symmetry but it might also be conceived from a more acoustical point of view. This work relates the story of Maasbracht a town on the banks of the Meuse River in the Dutch province of Limburg. Like all fairy tales the story begins serenely with ?Once upon a time?? The music evokes the atmosphere of this very pleasant region where the gentle way of life is the key to happiness. A lively and joyful passage depicts the cheerfulness of the people of Maasbracht. Maasbracht like many other towns suffered during World War II: sound colours darken and pictures of destruction run through our mind. In the midst of despair there is hope from grief comes new life. The future looks promising. The work leaves Maasbracht looking forward to the 21st century withconfidence. A highly descriptive work that is suitable for any concert or contest situation.
