Joan Tower 's Dumbarton Quintet (2008) for Piano Quintet. This work was premiered on 12 April 2008 at Dumbarton Oaks Washington DC by the Enso String Quartet with Joan Tower on thePiano. Following Stravinsky and Copland as the third commissioned composer by the Dumbarton Oaks Estate is of course quite daunting — particularly since these are two very strong composers that had an enormousinfluence on me. Their sense of musical continuity and profiling of ideas puts them in the category of musical geniuses. I have in fact dedicated two pieces to them: Petroushskates (to Stravinsky) and Fanfare for the UncommonWoman (to Copland). My musical debt to these two great composers is profound. The Dumbarton Quintet is a Piano Quintet dedicated to Susan Feder my longtime publisher at G. Schirmer and Associated MusicPublishers. (She is now with the Mellon Foundation). It was commissioned by the Dumbarton Oaks Estate. It is a 14-minute work in one movement that travels through several themes with different emotional contents.The first is a flowing line that is cast in a narrow space of smaller intervals first soft then loud but with a restrained kind of intensity that finally 'bursts out' into a more 'forward' and visceral type of intensity. Thisshifting between intensities in fact is part of the 'dna' of the work and as the piece progresses; each side tends to take on more and more extremes of expression. At particular points the 'softer' material becomes almostromantic consonant and singing in its expression whereas the 'louder' passages become the opposite — manic and aggressively dissonant. - Joan Tower

Molly is a middle-aged woman lying awake in bed next to her sleeping husband Leopold.Her long monologue a seemingly random melange of ideas in a stream of consciousness moves back and forth between her boorish lover Boylan and her aging husband. As she begins to drift off to sleep she recalls the day 16 yearsearlier when Leopold asked her to marry him. '...The wonderful directness of (his) setting eliminates any need for extensive analysis except to note that the work grows in intensity archlike as the fragmentary imagescircling Molly's somnolent mind build to a climax of energy and activity returning at the end to the gentle lulling of the opening -- Molly's final quiet thoughts as she drops off to sleep.' The primary theme is original with motives from America the Beautiful and The Star Spangled Banner interwoven throughout. A well-conceived and skillful lyric treatment for the young concert band.

Also known as “The Wind from the South” or “An Gaoth Aneas ” this setting forsecond year players provides melody for all sections of the band along with subtle and tasteful harmonic variants.

This new work is based on Irish folk music.In the first part the main theme is presented as a ballad starting with the piccolo (as replacement for the flute which is widely used in Ireland) moving on the wood section to end with the entire orchestra.It then changes to a kind of rock style theme: powerful rhythmic accompaniment with effects in dampers a pedal point and the use of the spoons which is typical of Irish music (Irish pub) high-range bongo drum (replacement for the Bodhran) etc.In this second part I introduced a second theme as a counterbalance played by several groups which has clearly a more legato character and therefore sounds more melodious.The climaxof the work starts in the low-range brass section with its marcato theme that is developed with a great deal of rhythmicity in the accompaniment clusters etc. into a percussion solo interspersed by the orchestra in five-eight time with frequent parallel movement in chords (folk music style).Towards the end theme 2 recurs twice: first as heard earlier with an extra counter melody and accompaniment pattern then in a canonical form in which the theme is played by three groups. The conclusion is a repeat of the middle section in five-eight time.I have tried to use many of the colours of a wind orchestra by having the wood sections and brass section play alone and making extensive use of dampers. Percussion also has a prominent role throughout the work.
