Life On Mars? by David Bowie was first released on the Album Hunky Dory in 1971. The single reached number 3 in the UK charts. The song's surreal lyrics detail a young girl's reaction to the media and her struggle with reality. A simple motif is repeated throughout the verse creating a memorable tune while the chorus features a soaring melody to add emotion to Bowie's strange imagery. Life On Mars? has here been arranged for SATB choir with Piano accompaniment by Barrie Carson Turner.

First published in 1926 Bye Bye Blackbird has been enduringly popular ever since. It has been recorded by numerous artists and its simplicity brings a beauty which works perfectly for SATB choir. French composer Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a prominent in his day best remembered for his Ave Maria and his opera Faust. 1854 saw the premiere of his Messe Solennelle also known as the Messe De Sainte-Cécile. This work fully established Gounod as a noteworthy composer. Despite being a minor composer to us today Gounod was famed in his day so much so that at his funeral Camille Saint-Saëns played the Organ and Gabriel Fauré conducted. Gounod s Messe Solennelle De Sainte-Cécile proves the composer's extraordinary talent and caught theattention of much of Paris when it was first performed. Famous recordings include that of the Chorus of Radio France with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. For all aspiring choirs Gounod s Messe Solennelle De Sainte-Cécile is an imperative sublime addition to the repertoire.

Simi Jadech is Hebrew for “give me your hand”. This work was commissioned by the royal wind band “De Heidegalm Heusden- Berkenbos” Belgium. The composer based his composition on a Jewish folk song of the same name which is characterised by the typical Klezmer style. This is an excellent work suitable for competitions or concerts. It has sufficient instrumentation throughout and can therefore be performed by most orchestras.

from the second half of the 18th Century- This is a tremendous collection of simple and short pieces for the Piano from the second half of the eighteenth century. It was a period in which a vast amount of material for amateurs was composed much of which remains today. This compilation brings together a small section of that literature that has unjustly all but faded into obscurity with by composers such as Johann Baptist Vanhal Johan Gottfried and Siegfried Smiedt. Accurately edited by Alfred Kreutz this book is also ideal for teaching as these pieces have little ornamentation and the minimum of expression marks whilst featuring fabulous and enjoyable melody.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto In G was written by the composer in 1778. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on the Flute making it one of the most important Concerti in the instrument's repertoire. Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert 's composed cadenzas for the work are essential to all performers of the concerto. Concerto In G is in three movements; 1. Allegro maestoso 2. Adagio ma non troppo and 3. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of D major. All threemovements contain a cadenza which initially would have been left for the performer to improvise. However cadenzas have since been written including those of Taffanel and Gaubert. Both were prominent flautists of their time and their understanding of the Flute concerto repertoire is second to none making their cadenzas well-informed and essential to performers of the concerto.

Drawing inspiration from American poet Maya Angelou's inspirational poem On the Pulse of Morning this unique work for band offers challenges and rewards for young players. Using the imagery of a rock a river a tree Angelou challenges us all to work for unity and peace. The music ranges from an energetic percussive pulse (rock) that utilizes plastic buckets played throughout the ensemble to a flowing chorale theme (river) that's heard near the beginning and again at the end. Throughout the piece grows and intensifies (tree) as various musical elements are combined and varied. Dramatic music with important cross-curricular opportunities! Dur: 4:10
