The inspiration for this piece commissioned by the United States Army Band came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Composed as a single movement rhapsody the work is framed by the riveting sounds of airborne bombing raids with brass and percussion combining to create a gripping sense of tension.

Op. 31 Mwv A 9- Psalm ' Non nobis Domine ' / ' Nicht unserm Namen Herr ' Op.31 MWV A 9 Mendelssohn's first great orchestral psalm took almost six years to complete from the initial sketches and the first version of 1830 to the final version of 1835. Its premiere which took place at the Leipzig Gewandhaus did not take place until 1838. Unlike his other orchestral psalms Mendelssohn took the Latin words from the Vulgate as his principal text which stems from Psalm 113. When he later prepared his own German translation he made use of Psalm 115 from the Luther Bible. This edition by the leading Mendelssohn authorityJohn Michael Cooper incorporates all the relevant sources. In accordance with the work's genesis the vocal parts are underlaid with the Latin text and the German text appears underneath. La mélodie du chant Schifferlied (Chant du batelier) de Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860) dérive non pas d’une barcarolle vénitienne mais d’une barcarolle de Provence.Après avoir arrangé la barcarolle provençale Friedrich Silcher écrit un texte et publie le chant sous le titre Es löscht das Meer die Sonne aus (premier vers du texte) dans un recueil d’airs et de chants traditionnels. Schifferlied développe une ligne simple fluide et limpide à l’instar des mélodies viennoises. L’arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie est fidèle à cette approche. Il peut être accompagné par un Chœur d’Hommes (TB - texte en langue allemande -Set vendu séparément - DHP 1094593-050).

Suite for symphonic wind band is a rich orchestral piece that taxes the musicians to the utmost. The first part starts with a lyric melody in the French horn section to be taken over by the full orchestra ending in a kind of anarchistic entrada. The second part starts with a transparently orchestrated polyphonic web slowly passing into a richly arranged wave like movement that stops suddenly leading to the third part's attaca start. This third part is a fragile adagio con tenerezza. The finale is extremely virtuous and feriocious. It is a musical expression of anger fear and despair.

It is composed for a flexible line-up with each part plays a significant role meaning there is something of interest for all players. The lively rock tempo is maintained throughout providing an easy work which is full of energy!

Townscape was composed for the centenary of the St. Cecilia concertband from Oudenburg a town which also inspired the composer throughout this work. The first part depicts a train slowly approaching from afar and then vanishing into the distance again. This is rendered by a sort of repetitive pulse in the music. This is followed by some serious action with jet skis on the Sinnesael lake. Their spectacular twists and turns are transformed into an exuberant theme and a middle section with several changes of time signature. After that comes a restful lyrical Nocturne a musical painting of the mill at night. The work concludes with a lively finale that is an ode to dailylife in Oudenburg a place where people take initiative and there is plenty to see and do.

‘The retinue of the wine god Bacchus’ - just the title of this well-known work from the Sylvia ballet by Léo Delibes engenders a sense of excitement. Wil van der Beek’s excellent instrumentation makes sure that this piece will be a repertoire highlight!

Meet the Band! was written as an ‘opening work’ but it is also perfectly suitable for performing halfway through a concert programme. During the introduction the cornet players are lined up on both sides of the stage while the trombone players take centre stage. Gradually all the sections of the band are introduced to the audience. Meet the Band? You certainly have!
