36 Fugues- The Czech composer Antonin Reicha (1770-1836) was famous as both an experimental composer and as a teacher and theorist. His 36 Fugues for Piano testify to this experimentalism; they can be seen as a type of Well-Tempered Piano of the new ages basing the traditional Baroque fugue on radical new fundaments. The first edition of this unusual collection was produced in 1803 in Vienna by Reicha's own publishing company Au Magasin de l'Imprimerie chimique. It included both a dedication poem to Joseph Haydn and a comprehensive foreword in which Reicha identifies the characteristics of his compositional style.The second edition (Vienna 1805) included a short theoretical text uber das neue Fugensystem (On the new fugal system) in the form of a polemic reacting to his critics one of whom was Beethoven. Six fugues are based on the themes of other composers (Haydn Bach Mozart Scarlatti Frescobaldi Handel). The musical text is a corrected reprint of the edition by Vaclav Jan Sýkora from 1973 which itself was based on the referred to edition from 1805 as well as on the later edition by Tobias Haslinger (Vienna c. 1828). Over the course of time many composers have honoured the mother of Jesus with a musical Ave Maria (a Hail Mary). One of the most well-known is that of the French composer Charles François Gounod (1818-1893) who added a melody to the first prelude from Das Wohltemperierte Klavier by the German master-composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). The result is a long lyrical melody line with a wonderfully built-up curve of tension floating above a softly sparkling accompaniment. Lorenzo Bocci has arranged the Ave Maria by Bach/Gounod for clarinet ensemble.

Tanabata-In Japan July the 7th is a holiday known as Tanabata for which large celebrations are held throughout the country. The holiday is based on a legend about a young man and a young woman who are separated by the Milky Way and can only see each other once a year on this night. The Seventh Night of July is Itaru Sakai’s musical interpretation of this romantic legend. The flugel horn and euphonium solos during the middle movement represent the two main themes from the legend.

The court organist Antonio de Cabezon (ca. 1510-1566) who was appointed to Queen Isabella's court chapel in Toledo at the young age of 16 was rightly regarded by his contemporaries as the leading Spanish organist and keyboard player of the 16th century. His hymns and versets are based on short decorated harmonisations of the psalm tones. In the tientos the transformation from vocal motet style to a style of writing suitable for keyboard instruments is perfectly executed. This Urtext edition contains a selection of Cabezon's best known works and consists of four volumes.
