The haunting melody of this traditional tune likely dates to the Middle Ages and was published by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams in the 1906 English Hymnal. Freely adapted by Johnnie Vinson in this setting for young bands the minor melodyis stated first by low clarinets and horns. The next section introduces an original theme which is then combined with the first melody in the moving final section. Manhã De Carnaval appeared as a principal theme in the 1959 Portuguese-language film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus). Manhã De Carnaval became one of the first compositions identified with Bossa Nova to gain popularity outside Brazil. The title was particularly popular in the United States where the song is considered to be one of the most important Brazilian Jazz/Bossa songs that helped establish the Bossa Nova movement in the late1950s. Here it has been arranged for Mandolin Orchestra.

Une éclipse solaire est un phénomène naturel qui nous montre combien nous sommes dépendants de cet astre brillant source de lumière et source de vie.

The tune 'Brother John ' or 'Bruder Martin' to Mahler's recognition is used in the third movement titled 'Funeral March in the Manner of Callot ' to create a sense of irony. The inspiration for this section was a woodprint from a book of fairy tales. The print depicts forest animals serving as pallbearers at a hunter's forest funeral. The question is not so much 'Are you sleeping (forever)?' as it is 'Are we mourning or celebrating?' The animals appear unsure whether to focus on the end of the hunter or the end of the hunt. Mahler sets the tune in a minor key to stress this irony as the music moves between merriness and brooding. The tune appears as a canon or round.
