Plate corrections bear witness to the care withwhich Beethoven placed slurs and pedal markings in order to be consistent and unambiguous. By means of a thorough examination of the sources this new Urtext edition presents many corrections in terms of articulation dynamics and notes. ‘Toccata Festiva’ was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the ‘Toccata Festiva’: on the one hand the different themes are developed freely on the other the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).

Sound Variations is a work comprising of eight short sections each based on a simple theme each characterised by a great variety of styles and sounds. It opens with a fanfare-like introduction that soon leads into the presentation of the main theme followed by five variations on this theme. Each of these variations has its own style: Swing Latin Waltz March and Rock. After a final repeat of the main theme the work comes to an end with a brilliant finale.

Elle fut offerte comme cadeau d’adieu à Michael Steiner le directeur musical qui quittait la formation en 2009 après onze années passées à sa tête. Sous son impulsion les musiciens ont accompli d’immenses progrès. Lui dédier une pièce en guise de remerciement s’imposait comme une évidence. La création de l’œuvre a eu lieu le 17 mai 2009. L’orchestre était dirigé pour la dernière fois par son chef. Blazon permet d’exploiter le talent des cuivres et des percussions. La pièce s’ouvre avec une grande fanfare pleine d’énergie qui chemine à travers les pupitresdes trompettes des cors et des cuivres graves. Un changement de tonalité fait apparaître un thème en legato joué d’abord par les bois puis repris par l’orchestre en entier. La fanfare initiale revient soulignée par des motifs ornementés dans les bois pour mener l’œuvre vers sa fin brillante.

Dvo ák ’s Requiem for soloists choir and orchestra is one of the highlights within the international choral repertoire. Now Bärenreiter is presenting this work in an arrangement by Joachim Linckelmann with chamber Orchestra based on the full score from the Complete Edition of the Works by Antonín Dvo ák . The arrangement dispenses with all the brass instruments except for a single Horn; all that remains of the Percussion arethe Timpani; the Organ has also been taken out. The cor anglais and Bass Clarinet parts can be replaced by an Oboe and Clarinet (ossia staves in score and parts). This arrangement which judiciously reduces the richness of Dvo ák ’s original orchestration makes the work available to a broader range of performers outside professional circles.

Beethoven's famous concerto for Violin and Orchestra has appeared in many editions over the last 150 years but none has truly done justice to the work. Now the acclaimed Beethoven scholar Jonathan Del Mar has achieved just that. Working with all known sources Del Mar finally presents us with Beethoven's intended solo Violin articulation dynamics and slurring; there are even note corrections in the solo part.
