What is a good tone in flute playing? Surely it must be more than just clean (ie not producing many unwanted sounds) colourful (with adequate timbre) flexible (able to produce dynamic adjustments) or just a really big tone. The well-known Swiss flautist P.-L. Graf is concerned that the production of tone should not be seen as an aesthetic end in itself but chiefly as a living means of expression and as a musical event. In this practice volume he has picked 3x7 examples from the flute and operatic repertoire in order to work through three sets of themes: 1.) cantabile playing at a piano dynamic 2.) dynamic flexibility and variation of tone colour 3.) fullness and intensity of sound. This offers concentrated training for all flautists from student through to professional player.

James Newton Howard composed this dynamic fanfare for the closing segment of the 1993 movie Grand Canyon (starring Danny Glover Kevin Kline and Steve Martin). The film is now largely forgotten however the music remains a vibrant and powerfulstatement and a very effective concert opener. Skillfully adapted by Paul Murtha with heroic brass figures woodwind flourishes and thundering percussion.

French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Three Divertissements for Clarinet Quartet in 1964. As with his other wind compositions Three Divertissements was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured into musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become ahigh profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. The Three Divertissements are named; 1) Proceedings 2) Masquerade and 3) Rounds. This Tomasi piece is suitable to an advanced Clarinet Quartet providing an exciting alternative addition to the ensemble repertoire.

Fantasy on Themes by Beethoven-A powerful work for the symphonic band Ode To The Spirit Of Man is based on thematic material taken from the 4th movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and developed into a fantasy of kaleidoscopic nature. The opening is a joyfulexpression of the spirit of freedom and is based on the composer’s own themes derived from Beethoven’s music. Throughout the work various themes from the symphony are interwoven including Alla Marcia Scherzo Andante maestoso and finally theuplifting Ode to Joy .
