In the Variations on Old Psalm-Tunes for Organ Dyson fully explores the composer’s chosen sources: ‘Hard the glad sound’ from Ravencroft’s Psalter (1621) Orlando Gibbons’s Song 24 ‘O word Immortal’ and Song 5 ‘O Prince of Peace ’ and ‘I was glad’ from the Scottish Psalter (1615). These works are popular for service voluntaries.Twentieth century composer and educator George Dyson was a writer of ambitious and critically well-received works that due to their unfashionably accessible late Romantic style were allowed to languish and are now in the process of reassessment and renewed performance. However Dyson’s works for unison Voice and church music – in particular histwo settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis – have remained active in the Anglican repertoire. The words of the Wedding Hymn O Perfect Love were written by the English poet Dorothy Frances Gurney (née Blomfield ) (1858-1932) to be used with an earlier melody. Sir Joseph Barnby then wrote a tune specifically for the words in 1890. This was popularised when it was used in 1893 at the wedding of the Duke of York and Princess Mary of Tek who would later become King George V and Queen Mary. Sir Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) was an English composer and conductor. He was a chorister at York Minster before studying at the RAM. He later became director of Music at Eton and Principal of the Guildhall School of Music.

Venezuelan composer Beatriz Bilbao offers us Encore Un Mystere for mixed choir a cappella. The poem belongs to the Philosophical Sonnets of the Count of Saint Germain a renowned spiritual and philosophical guru. In a basically tonal harmonic movement the texture of this work elaborates in a profound simplicity throughout three clearly defined sections. The core exploration of the idea of nothing so eloquently expressed in the text is explored at the third and final section where the voices freely express sounds of murmurs whispers breaths etc. while the dynamic contour moves from mezzo-piano to nothing. A beautiful piece to program in fall and spring concerts for collegeand community choirs. Medium in difficulty.
