I Saw Eternity is a choral work for mixed voices with soloists from within the choir. It was first performed by the London Philharmonic Choir in 2003. It is based on a text by Henry Vaughan ' I saw Eternity the other night Like a great Ring of pure and endless light All calm as it was bright......' a text which makes this piece suitable for a variety of contexts both sacred and secular. The feeling of acceleration typical of 18th century song is captured through ritards accelerandos and tempo changes at the beginning of each verse. But after it was bought by the French pianist François Lang (1908-1944) there were doubts about its whereabouts for several decades. So even Volume I/2 of the complete New Liszt Edition publishedby Editio Musica Budapest in 1971 could rest only on the notation of the first printed editions. 'The Keystone Kops' was a series of silent comedies featuring an incompetent group of policemen. They first appeared in the 1912 film Hoffmeyer's Legacy but it was the 1913 feature The Bangville Police that confirmed their popularity. 'The Keystone Kops' were renowned for making mistakes particularly with a great deal of energy and activity and all done with a major lack of coordination. Carl Davis's 3 minute tour de force is a fine encore piece!
