Love-Promise is the third movement of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak ’s cycle‘Five Choruses For Male Voice’. The cycle of five choruses is set to Lithuanianfolk texts translated by Frantisek Ladislav Celakovsky and is written for unaccompanied male choir (TTBB Voices). The title page of the autograph score bears the note: “Composed on the journey from Prague to Vienna 12th ofDecember 1878”. The individual parts of the cycle present a vibrant palette of moods from the balladic ‘Dwellers by the Sea’ to the final light-hearted ‘The Sparrow’s Feast’. The songs’ melodies echo thespirit of folk songs and the composer used simple but colourful harmonies and chose a strophic form.

Bernhard Lewkovitch (b. 1927) is a Danish composer born in Copenhagen to Ukrainian parents. Brought up in the Catholic Church he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music but the vast majority of his choral workshave been intended for liturgical use making him somewhat of an outsider to the contemporary Danish classical music world. Twelve Motets from the Spanish Golden Age were collected edited and published in 1971 towards the end of the decade that was the only period Lewkovitch spent working outside the church. They are a testament to his commitment to rediscover and popularise historical compositions from the continentalrenaissance era even while he was experimenting with modern techniques in his own compositions.

Writing for children in the Orkney Islands Davies has also included some local references: these can bechanged to suit other times and places. Musically the piece is a bright sequence of little songs choruses dialogue scenes and dances probably best suited to children between the ages of eight and twelve though the parts of theugly sisters can usefully be taken by boys with broken voices.
