In 1887 Antonin Dvorak revised several of the works he had composed in the 1860s and 1870s most of which he then published for the first time. In this context he asked the music critic Ludevit Prochazka to return a manuscript copy of the PianoQuintet in A major op. 5 (B 28) composed 15 years earlier. But after thoroughly revising the work he declined to publish it; instead he wrote a new piano quintet in the same key - the famous op. 81. And so the manuscript copy he requested fromProchazka remains the sole source for this early piece of chamber music. Dvoraks first Piano Quintet was never published during his lifetime. Based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. Orchestral parts available in a large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm). Haydn ’s Symphony No.26 received its nickname Lamentazione during his lifetime though it is unclear whether this stems directly from the composer. This work probably originated no later than 1770. Its first and second movements quote excerpts from Gregorian chants used in Holy Week. In Haydn ’s day it was customary to play individual movements in church services and it may be assumed that these two movements were performed and possibly composed independently from each other. Continuing thecollaboration between Bärenreiter and the Henle publishing company in the areas of large-scale choral works operas and symphonies Haydn ’s Symphony No.26 is appearing based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. The complete performance material for several of Haydn ’s Sturm und Drang symphonies and all of the London and Paris symphonies has already been published.

During his short lifetime Max Reger (1873-1916) was a prolific composer with many of his best known works being composed for organ. The ten chorale preludes in this selection are from his set of Thirty Short Chorale Preludes Op.135a composed as short voluntaries for liturgical use rather than for recitals in these arrangements Philip Sparke has kept this in mind and each prelude can be performed with minimal instrumentation for those occasions where a small band is needed. They also make great pieces for band warm-ups or studies in intonation sound and balance.

Overture-In 1786 Mozart composed his wonderful opera Le Nozze di Figaro (KV 492). The Italian libretto based on the play Le mariage de Figaro by Beaumarchais was written by Lorenzo da Ponte—who also made the libretti of Mozart’s opera’s Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. In the opera Le Nozze di Figaro Count Almaviva tries to seduce the fiancée of Figaro his valet. Eventually through four acts full of complicated intrigue he is outwitted. In his music Mozart—at times in a humorous way—reflects the numerous social and erotic intrigues with both empathy and insight. The brilliant overture is just as vivacious and witty as the opera itself. Mozart delightfullyanticipates the passion and playful love that is to come. The skillful transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahashi certainly does justice to this appealing music.

Hammerklavier- “Here’s a sonata that will challenge pianists and that one will be able to play in 50 years”: thus Beethoven is said to have written to his publisher Artaria regarding his mighty “Hammerklavier” Sonata Op.106. Given its monumental scale and extreme musical and pianistic demands the term “Grande Sonate” seems almost an understatement. Dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria this sonata is famous not least for the seemingly unplayable autograph metronome marks in the opening movement and final fugue – a matter on which the editor offers a new explanation. Nothing is uncomplicated in this pinnacle of the classical-romantic piano sonata composed in “adversecircumstances” from 1817 to 1819. Even the sources pose supreme editorial challenges.
