Cesarini composed this work as a tribute to the memory of Darius Milhaud born a century earlier in Aix-en-Provence France. The premiere conducted by the composer was presented by the Civic Philharmonic of Balerna in December 1992. The titles of the four-part suite include: La Villageoise (The Village Maiden) Le petit berger (The Little Shepherd) La Princesse (The Princess) and Le Lutin (The Imp). The numerous musical reference themes begin with five folksongs from the Provence region and continue with melodies written by French composers of the seventeenth century. Additional interest is created by the use of old dance forms (Ronde Musette Pavane and Farandole) toillustrate each historical character.

We also took a step back right to the very beginning giving the work its original title Musica Dominicalis which furtherunderlines its timelessness. This edition contains a preface and notes on performing the work by Jan Hora in three languages (Cz./Ger./Eng.)

subTERRA tells the story of a miner who miraculously survives the collapse of a mine shaft. The work consists of five movements:1. The Dream: A horrible nightmare plagues the miner. Dissonances and unusual sounds foreshadow the imminent disaster.2. The Work: The rhythmic second part describes the daily grind of a miner from driving into the mine shaft to working deep underground.3. The Accident: Suddenly a piercing alarm is heard. Everyone tries to escape the mine amidst the ensuing chaos as the mine shaft collapses trapping the unfortunate miner.4. Hope: Buried under rubble and debris the miner regains consciousness. A prayer can be heard.5. The Rescue: A powerfulmaestoso symbolizes the successful rescue and survival of the trapped miner.

Beethoven’s York’scher Marsch is one of a collection of three tattoos (WoO 18-20) and has had a chequered history to say the least. There are several autograph copies for different instrumentations dedicated to different archdukes who were commanders of various regiments of the army including the Prussian regiment called Marsch des Yorkschen Corps which is how its current title arose. Philip Sparke’s arrangement enables a march by this major classical composer to be enjoyed by concert bands.

Concert Suite-Deliverance is an exciting concert suite by Etienne Crausaz. The first movement is in the style of a siciliana starting out quiet and calmly then slowly building in excitement and energy. The second movement a scherzo allows for colourful sounds and timbres and is full of humorous musicalelements and contrasts. The third movement the vivace presents a dialogue between the higher and lower registers of the band with plenty of time changes. Deliverance is an action-packed composition full of colour and contrast.

Although Cesar Franck won many prizes during his student days his music was generally unrecognised by his contemporaries. His pieces were written in the romantic style whilst retaining a classical structure and his later compositions were referred to as 'cathedrals of sound'. Panis Angelicus is poetic and almost serene and this arrangement by Philip Sparke retains all of the beauty of the original.

Tylman Susato (approximately 1500-1561) was an accomplished Flemish composer musician and music publisher. He composed numerous works and published several collections among them Danserye (1551) the third volume of his Musyckboexken which contained his own four-voice airs and dances. Several of these were inspired by traditional Flemish airs. Renaissance scholar Manu Mellaerts has created a graceful arrangement of the most famous pieces from La Mourisque.
