England enjoys a rich folk song tradition. Composers such as Cecil Sharp and Vaughan Williams rekindled an interest in this heritage at the beginning of the 20th century by arranging numerous songs some of which were transcribed for the _x001F_first time. Philip Sparke selected three songs from the 18th and 19 century for his Three Folk Song Miniatures : the _x001F_sherman’s song Dance to Your Daddy the love song O Waly Waly and Bobby Shafto a song from the northwest of England.

Concert March-This piece was composed in the summer of 2000 on commission of the Whightull Wind Ensemble. Seaside Road is a march in two-four time. The work begins with a tempestuous sound followed by a light passage. Featuring amongst others your Bass Clarinet and Euphonium soloists in the trio section the work builds towards an agile tutti before concluding with a powerful closing section. A must for all your summer season concerts.

for Violin and Orchestra-Beethovens concert for violin and orchestra is one of the most famous pieces in music history. It was numerously published in the last 150 years but none lived up to the original composition.

Ballad is a jazzy flugelhorn solo. After the introduction of the main theme the soloist gets the opportunity to improvise freely. Hereafter the main theme returns slower than in the beginning and ends in a melancholic atmosphere. In this composition the soloist is able to show every aspect of the flugelhorn one of the favorite instruments of the composer.

Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself after the Greek language meaning Nowhereland and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.
