Moto Perpetuo is a single movement work for solo Violin with Piano accompaniment. It was written by the British composer Edward German and first published in 1890 while he was musical director of the Globe Theatre in London. Edward German was an English musician and composer of Welsh descent best remembered for his extensive output of incidental music for the stage and as a successor to Arthur Sullivan in the field of English comic opera. While French influences are clearly apparent in his music German was said to be a ‘stylistic cosmopolitan who wrote music that is quintessentially English’ (David Russell Hulme).

In this work the composer portrays what he sees as the typical characteristics of youth his young daughter being a source of inspiration. The music describes different emotions between parents and their child such as parental love proudness andalso some tension. The final movement starts with a fugue based on the first theme leading to the work’s climax where the chorale appears in majestic form.

The source (sauce!) of inspiration for this work was somewhat unusual. Whilst on tour with a youth brass group Kazys Daugėla ate a Piri-Piri salad that had a wickedly hot sauce. He jokingly told his fellow band members that one day he would write a piece to celebrate this mouth watering experience. The result was this Hot and Spicy piece garnished with a light mambo rhythm!

The film tells the heartbreaking story of two children in the Second World War who come together over the loss of innocent animals. The film received overwhelming critical acclaim outside of its native France where it initially went criminally unappreciated. It was so acclaimed that it won a special award for an out of competition film at the 25th Academy Awards. The soundtrack for Jeux Interdits is fittingly beautiful for such a sentimental movie but is also a greatly uplifting piece that willbe a joy to hear and play.

Anniversary Overture was commissioned in 1968 as a twenty-first birthday piece for Hong Kong Philharmonic Society and is a four-minute firework display for orchestra. Within the framework of a two-four Allegro giubiloso Arnold alternates two major themes one breezy the other tender developing them extensively and landing resoundingly in F major. This new transcription brings an exuberant work to the field of symphonic wind band for the first time.

Wine Women and Song op. 333-À l’instar du Beau Danube bleu la valse Wein Weib und Gesang op. 333 ( Aimer boire et chanter 1869) a été composée à l’origine pour le Wiener Männergesangverein (Chœur d’Hommes de Vienne). Johann Strauss s’est inspiré d’une citation attribuée à Martin Luther « Qui n'aime point le vin les femmes ni le chant restera sot toute sa vie » (“Wer nicht liebt Wein Weib und Gesang der bleibt ein Narr sein Leben lang”).La version originale de Strauss s’ouvre avec un long passage d’ouverture de près de cent mesures ( Quasi religioso suivie d’un Allegro ) très rarement joué. Cette transcription pour Orchestre d’Harmonie en est égalementdépourvue mais débute néanmoins avec une introduction brillante ( Maestoso ) d’où se détache la première ligne mélodique qui revient plus tard dans le quatrième air de valse. Le premier thème représente la quintessence de l’art de vivre viennois ; Strauss s’appuie sur la chanson à boire Stoß an stoß an du Liebchen mein (“Trinquons ma bien-aimée”) extraite de son opérette Wiener Blut (Sang viennois) . Les trois airs qui suivent font également preuve de vivacité et d’élégance. Et bien entendu comme dans toutes les autres valses de concert le thème initial revient dans le passage de fin. Une courte cadence endiablée clôt l’œuvre.
