In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695 no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarch”. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances” marches and decided to add his own sixth march to the existing collection.

Viola Coro I- The Missa in F of 1734 for two or four choirs is probably Pergolesi ’s most important work for choir and orchestra. The nickname 'Missa Romana' was added later in reference to a performance given in Rome during Pergolesi ’s lifetime. This Urtext edition presents the work for the first time in the four-choir version that Pergolesi wrote for the above mentioned performance in Rome. Choirs III and IV are reproduced in smaller type and are added to the version for double choir in order to intensify the overall sound. This allows the work to be performed not only with two choirs but also in the delightful enlarged version for fourchoirs. Especially important in this context are the years 1773 and 1775 which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity in this domain lie partly in the fact that Mozart who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility ofexperimenting with all the new compositional techniques acquired during his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773. In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe). The D-major Concerto BWV 1054 originated as a transcription of Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major BWV 1042. The principal source for our edition is the autograph score of Bach’s harpsichord concertos preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek (Mus. ms. Bach P 234) where BWV 1054 forms the third item. Toaccommodate the upper limit of the harpsichord keyboard Bach decided to transpose the piece down a whole tone which allowed him to retain the frequently occurring peak pitch e3 without altering the melodic line. The D-major Concerto owes its popularity to the clear and straightforward formal design of its movements no less than its overall mood of relaxed merriment. This mood also finds expression in Bach’s choice of the rondo form for the final movement a form otherwise seldom encountered in his concertos. The Last Song is a beautiful and sad choral that begins very slowly and calmly. Gradually the instrumentation increases leading to a big climax. After this Grandioso ma con moto the instrumentation gets smaller and the piece comes to an end with the initial theme but this time even slower than in the opening.
