The 1779 poem with the original title Abendlied (Evening song) was set to music by Johann Abraham Peter Schulz and has become perhaps the most famous Abendlied in the German-speaking world. This exciting suite draws on music from three masters of the early 17th century John Bull Isaac Posch and Paul Peuerl. Variations by John Bull should be played in strict tempo while the Intrada by Isaac Posch can be done justice by different tempi; arranger Peter Knudsvig prefers a fairly slow interpretation himself.
