Against the historical background of the so-called Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD in which the Cherusci leader Arminius as Liberator of Germany (Tacitus) inflicted a devastating defeat on the Romans Handel's opera first performed in 1737 is about the disputes between the Chatti and the Cherusci. Arminius has married the daughter of his arch-enemy Segestes. for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra- In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel ’s most thrilling compositions and for Wittgenstein the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel ’s Piano Concerto For The Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor Douglas Woodfull-Harris was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace the work’s evolutionfrom Ravel ’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition. A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel ’s own Piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. This copy is the sole source reflecting Wittgenstein’s own interpretation and containing his changes to the final cadenza. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the Piano reduction and enabled the editor amongst other things to correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions including the solo Piano part. The Piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel ’s and Wittgenstein’s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein. The main body of this work consists of an extended invocation in the style of a polychoral motet based on an anonymous Latin text and ending with a plea for peace. This is preceded by a briefer introductory section based on passages from the Old Testament in which the horrors of violence and oppression are described. This section features the use of several extra-musical effects (whispering hissing finger- and tongue-clicks foot-stamping and indeterminate clusters) most of which form part of the South African choral tradition.SSSSAAAA. Mass in Time of War- Haydn was in England in 1795 when he received word from his new Prince Nicolaus II Esterházy that the Esterházy orchestra was to be reformed and Haydn was to serve again as active Capellmeister. Prince Nicolaus II demanded little from his Capellmeister except the usual routine of administration; but Haydn was to compose every year a new Mass for the name day of the Princess Josepha Maria which was celebrated the Sunday afterwards in the Bergkirche at Eisenstadt. It is known that a new Haydn mass was performed before a packed congregation in the Piaristenkirche in Vienna on St. Stephen’s Day (26 December) 1796. The writer of these notes examined – when preparingthis edition – the music archives of the church and found contemporary parts on the Missa in tempore belli in the church; and it seems certain that this (and not the Heiligmesse) was the work performed on that occasion and thus also the work which Haydn had just finished and performed in Eisenstadt.
