Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI) Arnhem Holland in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing* which has no exact translation but can mean for example five elements five phases or five states of change . It is central to all elements of Chinese thought including science philosophy medicine andastrology and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal metal changes to liquid (water) when heated water helps trees grow wood burns to create fire fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically with minimal repetition and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one with the opening material appearing transformed at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times

Es löscht das Meer die Sonne aus-C’est à Venise que naquirent les barcarolles chants des gondoliers au rythme toujours ternaire (6/8 9/8 ou 12/8) qui suggère par la répétition constante d'un même rythme de basse le balancement régulier des embarcations sur la lagune. La mélodie du chant Schifferlied (Chant du batelier) de Friedrich Silcher (1789-1860) dérive non pas d’une barcarolle vénitienne mais d’une barcarolle de Provence.Après avoir arrangé la barcarolle provençale Friedrich Silcher écrit un texte et publie le chant sous le titre Es löscht das Meer die Sonne aus (premier vers du texte) dans un recueil d’airs et de chants traditionnels. Schifferlied développe une ligne simple fluide et limpide à l’instar des mélodies viennoises. L’arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie est fidèle à cette approche. Il peut être accompagné par un Chœur d’Hommes (TB - texte en langue allemande -Set vendu séparément - DHP 1094593-050).

The Broken Sword is one of the five ceremonial swords kept in the Tower of London and is used during the coronation of a new king or queen. Legend has it that an angel broke off the tip of the sword in an effort to prevent an unjust killing. Composer Kevin Houben lets his music retell this intriguing legend. Broken Sword resembles a film score in many ways and will paint vivid images as the band plays its way through the legend. Many different moods create a contrast-rich work that makes for an exciting listening and playing experience every time!

Sinofinia dall'opera- The Barber of Seville is based on the first of Beaumarchais‘ (1732- 1799) two sequential plays The Marriage of Figaro being the second although unusually the overture does not contain any themes from the ensuing opera. The music however is sparkling and tuneful encompassing the ‘spirit‘ of the story that is about to unfold. The overture follows the form of the classic Italian style with a slow introduction followed by a brilliant Allegro. Of course the famous crescendo so typical of Rossini’s works is also present.

The piece starts slow and deliberate then flows into a faster movement in which rhythmic precision and accurate combined playing are required. Influences from light music together with elements from rock music have been interwoven in the piece.
