Ragtime is a piece that grew directly out of the 'Ragtime' section of A Soilder's Tale . It is scored for a small chamber orchestra of eleven instruments: flute clarinet two horns trombone big drum snare drum side drum cymbals cimbalom first and second violin viola and double bass. The cimbalom assumes a prominent almost soloistic role as Stravinsky only became aware of it in 1915 and sought to use it whenever possible thereafter.

This rousing jubilant overture mixes five original themes with the well-known doxology Old Hundredth which is also known as Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow . The hymn is presented in short lyrical energetic motif fragments which combine until the complete hymn is presented in the form of a chorale prelude. This is a wonderful and truly uplifting concert work.

The centenary of Dahl's birth in Wales was celebrated in 2016 and this piece comes from the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's which starred Dahl's first wife Patricia Neal. The easy-listening style of the music portrays the glamour and glitz of Roald Dahl's immediate post-war life in the USA.

Paso Bella is full of the typical fiery and melodic characteristics of the paso doble. The hot Spanish temperament can be heard from the opening themes in the minor key as is usual in a paso doble to the last bars of the trio.
