In the early days of the United States a main source of transportation was the many waterways rivers and the Great Lakes. From this focal point of commerce and social activity came many wonderful folk songs. Shore to Shore uses two of these sailing songs. Blow ye winds blow and Leave her no more.

For Solo Clarinet in A/Bass Clarinet in B-flat Flute (Piccolo Alto Flute) Horn in F Trombone Piano Violin Viola Violoncello and Double Bass. Crockett's Dance Concerto for clarinet in A doubling on bass clarinet and wind ensemble riffs on the theme of its premiere event at the Smithsonian dancing the night away until dawn. The work's form plays out as if the soloist were performing a set as the leader of some sort of dance band on this--or another planet. An expanded version for thirty-three musicians and a piano reduction (titled Dance Sonata) are also available from the publisher. Duration: c. 18 minutes.

This work which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost but wasrediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983. 'This is a dramatic emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near theend. Then comes a quick movement a kind of demonic scherzo including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity though not before exceedingly testing times for bothplayers. Duration c. 25mins.

In contrast to his major virtuoso works this charming genre piece can even be easily played on smaller (double-manual) instruments even without swell-organ and reeds. The 'Liszt organ' at the village church of Denstedt near Weimar which was built by the Peternell brothers in 1859/60 and has survived in its original state may be used as an example. It did not become known until in 1927 that the Ave Maria attributed to Jakob Arcadelt (around 1505-1568) was a revised version by the composer Pierre-Louis-Philippe Dietsch (1808–1865) who used the melody of Arcadelt'schanson Nous voyons que les hommes which he then harmonized into his own Romantic four-part choral setting and to which he added the sacred text as a contrafactum. Our separate edition wants to make this rather 'poetic' yet quite easy-to-play organ work without any major technical difficulties accessible to a large circle of interested people.
