Fiddle tunes have been an important part of American music since her earliest days. You’ll enjoy James Curnow’s new suite based on two fiddle tunes from the Revolutionary War period. The first movement uses the flowing melody Lovely Nancy which is about a beautiful two-masted sailing ship. The second movement comes from a knee-slapping fast paced dance tune called Hay Makers. This will be a wonderful contrast piece to use for that lighter moment in your concert. It’s always fun to explore band music that is a bit out of the ordinary! This one is great fun from beginning to end and carries a marvelous historic connection as well!

The Wooden Soldier is a short and simple piece commissioned by the Singapore Ministry of Education. It was originally intended as a compulsory piece for the 2012 Singapore Youth Festival. Because many school bands in Singapore are incomplete the composer was specifically asked to create a work that could equally be played by a limited ensemble - which explains various doubled andoptional parts.

This work was commissioned in memory of Peter J. Swanson a trumpet and cornet player who tragically died at the tender age of fourteen. Peter’s favorite gospel song Just a Closer Walk with Thee has been used as the basis for this piece of contrasts which takes the listener through many styles and moods. The spiritual character of the original song resounds gloriously in When Time Will Be No More.

Elias: I first came across Irina Ratushinskaya’s poetry when the collection ‘No I’m Not Afraid’ was published in England in early May 1986. The poems the various circumstances in which they were written and the poet’s integrity commitment and appalling situation (she was still imprisoned) all had a tremendous impact upon me. I was drawn inexorably into the world she describes so vividly. The powerful imagery of resistance the acceptance of shatteringrealities and the fantasies of different kinds of escape made poetry of truly universal significance and urgency and the idea of a setting for voice and large orchestra followed immediately. Each of the settings (in Russian) isself-contained and quite different in mood and orchestration. However I consider the songs as one piece and the whole cycle is performed without a break. All the basic musical material themes and motifs for the entire work arestated in the first few pages and the order of the poems was chosen to provide an overall musical and dramatic shape that attempts to link them together and to reflect more than the immediate meaning of the individual poems.

Buxtehude's organ music already fascinated J. S. Bach – and generations of organists ever since. Schott's urtext edition of his complete organ oeuvre in the renowned series 'Masters of the North German Organ School' is based on the sources taking the latest findings of the Buxtehude research into account. Unlike all previous Buxtehude editions this new edition by Claudia Schumacher follows the rhythm notation of the original i.e. the tablature thus providing for the first time the authentic version which enables the player to interpret the works in a differentiated manner. Volumes 3 and 4 contain a total of 48 chorale arrangements in alphabeticalorder of the initials of the chorales: Vol. 3 contains 26 pieces (A-L) Vol. 4 22 arrangements (M-W).

Sinfonia Hungarica is a three-movement symphony that depicts the history of Hungary. All three movements were inspired by historical key figures wars and other important events from this country. This symphony is a celebration of Hungary’s millennium in 2001.The final movement is named after ISTVAN the King who introduced Christianity into Hungary and who was crowned by Pope Silvestro II on January 1 1001. A rather solemn start leads to another war-like passage ending with some loud crashes. This symbolizes the fact that the body of the pagan Koppany was cut into four pieces and sent to the four castles of the country as an example. After a quiet almost religiousintermezzo the National Hymn of Hungary is introduced. This broad “grandioso” ending also has a symbolic meaning: after ten centuries Hungary has many reasons to look back on the past with pride and to look forward to the future with optimism and confidence.
