Piano Concerto g minor op. 33-Written in one fell swoop and polished for ages: thus arose one of the most significant works of Czech piano music. Dvorák’s G-minor Piano Concerto was composed in barely two months in 1876 only to be refined for more than seven years before it finally appeared in print. As a result Dvorák’s handwritten score abounds in changes and corrections. The 141-page autograph bears impressive witness to the work’s extraordinarily difficult gestation. Besides the original text it contains annotations in lead red and blue pencil as well as red ink not to mention many passages hidden beneath pasted slips of paper. Until 1990 the score was owned by Dvorák’s heirs. At the instigation of thepianist András Schiff – and with his generous financial support – we can now present the first complete facsimile edition of this exhilarating document in a high-quality reproduction that uncannily resembles the original to the last jot. Readers are invited to track down and follow the stages in the work’s genesis. An ideal gift for the “Dvorák Centenary Year” in 2004 … and of course there after as well.

Composer Modest Moussorgsky (1839-1881) came from the prosperous environment of Russian nobility. In 1865 after his officer’s education he joined the guard’s regiment in St. Petersburg. Here he met a number of well-known colleague-composers including Balakirev Cui Rimsky- Korsakov and Borodin. They strived to develop a “classical style” of composing while at the same time retaining a strong Russian influence. His opera Boris Godunov tells the tale of Boris who with the support of the people declared himself Tsar but totally fell short of the role. The opera became popular in the re-orchestrated version produced by Rimsky-Korsakov in 1896. Tohru Takahashi has usedthe beautiful musical themes of this opera in Selections from Boris Godunov - a captivating work for concert band.

from the Opera L'Orfeo-Claudio Monteverdi composed this toccata as an instrumental introduction for the opera L’Orfeo (1607). According to the composer this introduction should be played three times before the rising of the curtain. This is actually the first overture in the history of opera.)The story of Orfeo who enchanted nature with his music is tragic as he loses his beloved Eurydice and decides to retrieve her from the underworld. On their return journey one glance back at her is fatal: he loses her for the second time.)This arrangement for wind band is very suitable as a concert opener. The toccata is played three times just like the original. The first time it is played by a quintetconsisting of two trumpets and three trombones.)Various ways of performing this toccata are possible. The tension builds up more intensely if the quintet starts off stage. Eventually these five players join the band after which the tutti version follows two times. You can also have the brass play from the gallery during the second or third time for a double choir effect.

Solo sonatas written in Italy in the early decades of the 17th century dazzle with originality imaginative impulses and instrumental virtuosity – aspects that have all been taken into consideration when choosing pieces for this attractive compilation of Italian Baroque violin music. Along with violin sonatas by Italian maestri Arcangelo Corelli Antonio Vivaldi and Tomasi Albinoni this volume offers the chance to get to know lesser-known composers of this genre such as Carlo Farina and Michele Mascitti who introduced Italian violin music to Germany and France. Our Urtext edition glows with a variety of Baroque gems from that era.

for Violin Viola and Orchestra- There is no reference to the origin occasion or a performance of the Sinfonia concertante in E-flat for Violin Viola and Orchestra K. 364 (320d) because in all probability it was composed in Salzburg (presumably in summer or early autumn 1779): Mozart seems to have had no reason to write about it. It was apparently in Paris that he first had the occasion of giving the genre of the Symphonie concertante his special attention. On April 5 1778 he wrote to his father: Now I shall write a sinfonie concertante for flute wendling oboe Ramm Punto horn and Ritter bassoon. Even more discouraging must have been the fact that he had similardifficulties in Paris in having the works performed as he had in Mannheim. After the organizier of the Concerts spirituels Le Gros contrary to his promise did not include the mentioned sinfonie concertante in his program. Mozart had no reason to compose any more for this genre in Paris. After Mozart's return to Salzburg he might have been eager to introduce the new genre there especially since adequate instrumentalists were available. Also the choice of the solo instruments (violin and viola) in the work presented here was probably influenced by the popularity of this instrumental combination in Salzburg at that time. - Urtext of the New Mozart Edition - Full score & parts (BA4900) study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP176) violin viola and piano reduction (BA4900-90) available for sale
