Cantata No.211: Schweigt Stille Plaudert Nicht (Be quiet chatter not) BWV 211. The Coffee Cantata (BA 10211) and the Peasant Cantata (BA 10212) both on librettos by Picander are among the best-known and most frequently performed of Bach ’s secular cantatas. Written in or around 1733 the Coffee Cantata deals humorously with the importance of the newly fashionable beverage. This is demonstrated in the Soprano aria “Ah how sweet the coffee tastes lovelier than a thousand kisses milder than Muscatel”. Both cantatas reveal Bach ’s mastery in their unusual subject-matter formal design and musicalworkmanship. The work contains one large construction with different high points whereby the main theme is varied or orchestrated each time in one way or another finally ending in an impressive finale.

Bert Appermont composed Song for Sakiko during a stay in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo. “Sakiko” roughly translated means “flower child” and is associated with a dreamy poetic atmosphere. Appermont used these associations as a starting point while composing. Song for Sakiko starts with a very lyrical theme based on a minor third that forms the basis for the entire work. A second theme builds up to the grand finale which repeats the theme but in a major key and the music slowly fades away like ripples on a pond as both themes can be heard dissipating into nothingness.

For Isang Yun String Quartet No. 3 from 1959 marked the beginning of his European creative phase and of his official canon of works. Now it is possible to encounter Yun's early works from his Korean period in the form of his String Quartet No. 1 (1955). Three important 10-minute movements containing references not only to Asia but also to Ravel Bartok and Eastern European folk music and having an idiosyncratic structure: Yun lines up forms and figures makes them emerge from each other in a contrasting manner and assembles them into a mosaic-like whole seeking for integration laying down his material in layer upon layer and ending themovements with a rhythmic unison.
