The nation in turmoil is depicted in an intenselydriving and powerful section which evolves marvelously into a full-blown treatment of America with chorus and band. It has been edited by Donna Anderson aforemost expert on his life and works. The 16 songs in this volume allow the interested musician to track Griffes’ compositional style as it changed throughout his career. His early Romantic style is typified by Auf Geheimem Waldespfade which was first published in 1909 but dates from 1903-1907 when he was studying in Berlin. His German influences disappeared around 1912 and he drifted towards French impressionism whileexploring influences from the Far East. The 3 Javanese songs Hampelas Kinanti and Djakoan (c. 1917) were probably the last songs he wrote before his life was cut tragically short by influenza at the age of35. He remains the prominent American composer from the turn of the last century.
