In the nineties the Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan recorded a sparkling version of Vicki Sue Robinson’s disco classic Turn the Beat Around . She gave the song a catchy Latin beat and with this new impulse it was a worldwide hit. With the sentence from the song text “Love to hear percussion” in mind Peter Kleine Schaars incorporated a compelling percussion solo in his arrangement. The result is a dynamic piece of music full of pace and passion.

Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force 'Scramble!' is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain immortalised for ever in such films as 'Reach for the Sky'. The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is of course deceptive suddenly amid siren sounds there is a shout of 'Scramble!' and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillness manypilots described as they flew to engage the enemy before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned it would be only a short while before once again they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'

Doesn?t everyone get butterflies in the stomach every now and then? Every person has known moments of being in love. Accordingly in Butterfly Overture a charming love theme has been employed which is introduced by the alto saxophone in the slow middle passage. Additionally the butterfly is a cheerful flutterer that never moves in a straight line but always with an unexpected motion. In the Vivace the flute initially performs the fluttering theme after which it has been instrumented in diverse variations throughout the entire band. A wonderful new addition to the Concert Band repertoire that will be a firm favourite for many years.
