All animals seem to have their own peculiarities. from Paulus-This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen is of the well-known German chorale Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme taken from the oratorio Paulus (St. Paul) by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847). Although accredited to Mendelssohn it is thought the melody was in fact written by the pastor and poet Philipp Nicolai in 1599. Robert van Beringen’s arrangement perfectly captures the biblical story of St. Paul.

O kerstnacht schoner dan de dagen (‘Oh Christmas Night more beautiful than the days’) is a stately chorale that sings the praises of Jesus’ birth.Three wise men from the East Caspar Melchior and Balthazar follow a bright star in the sky which leads them to Bethlehem. There they worship the newborn King and offer him gold frankincense and myrrh: Wij komen van Oosten (We’ve come from the East’).This musical Christmas story ends with a festive repeat of the third movement the stately chorale.

Gawan Roberts wrote this march in 2001 on the occasion of the play Brassed Off which took place in the Frisian village of Jorwert. The march has been written in the virtuosic English brass band style.
