These two anthologies give an overview of the significant music for violin and piano in Italy written in the early decades of the twentieth century. Contents include works by Monti Simonetti Pizzetti and Castelnuovo-Tedesco. The first signs of a revival in Italian music at the beginning of the twentieth century are mostly found in the important contributions of a generation of musicians all born in and around the year 1880: Ottorino Respighi Ildebrando Pizzetti Gian Francesco Malipiero and Alfredo Casella. Thanks to them the music scene in Italy began to widen its horizons which basically meant going beyond the 'exclusive cultivation of melodramatic opera and encouraging an awareness of symphonic music in the country.' This anthology provides a meaningful overview of the music for Violin and Piano written by these composers the founders of the movement and also by thosethey inspired. The pieces have been selected for their musical value their didactic usefulness and their ability to represent a particular period in the history of Italian music and culture.

French composer Emile Pessard (1843-1917) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won first prize for harmony and the 1866 Prix de Rome. Andalouse contributes to his significant catalogue of compositions. As well as composing Pessard taught a wealth of prolific students including Maurice Ravel and Jacques Ibert. Extracted from his Opus 20 Andalouse for Flute and Piano accompaniment displays typical French romantic features including semiquaver flourishes use of a wide tessitura and syncopated rhythms.
