Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The fifth movement expresses the carefree and optimistic character of the Hobbits in a happy folk dance; the hymn that follows emanates the determination and noblesse of the hobbit folk. The symphony does not end on an exuberant note but is concluded peacefully and resigned in keeping with the symbolic mood of the last chapter “The Grey Havens” in which Frodo andGandalf sail away in a white ship and disappear slowly beyond the horizon. Its title Hail the Dragon! references a work Philip Sparke wrote in 1984 The Year of the Dragon. The piece opens with a lively and energetic fanfare. The mood becomes more subdued in the centre section as the cornet introduces a new theme that builds to an emotional climax. This leads into a recap of the opening fanfare which acts as a type of descant to short quotations from the last movement of The Year of the Dragon before reaching a thunderous finale.

Thomas Tertius Noble (1867-1953) was a British organist composer and choirmaster who spent the latter part of his career in the United States. He studied at the Royal College of Music before serving at Ely and the York as organist and choirmaster. In 1913 he took up a position at St Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan New York where he remained for thirty years and is credited with establishing a choir school in the Anglican tradition that continues to this day. His second setting of the evening canticles the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis is in the key of A major. It is scored for SATB chorus with Piano or Organ accompaniment.

Un an auparavant Brahms avait été fait docteur « honoris causa » de l’Université de Breslau. Dans un premier temps il se contenta d'une simple note manuscrite à titre de remerciement mais comprit rapidement que cela ne saurait suffire. Il composa donc l’ Ouverture pour une fête académique en remerciement pour sa nomination. L’œuvre fut créée à l’Université de Breslau le 4 janvier 1881 sous la direction du compositeur. Sorte de fantaisiepétillante et inventive l’ Ouverture académique est constituée de plusieurs chansons estudiantines allemandes en vogue à l’époque. En raison de son développement accessible riche en expressivité espiègle et lumineux cette ouverture reste très largement appréciée de nos jours.Cette transcription pour Orchestre d’Harmonie signée Tohru Takahashi est fidèle à l’œuvre originale.
