Eight Chorale Preludes. Grade: 5-7

This fantasy tells the story of Oregon one of America's north-western states. Traveling by train on the Northern Pacific Railroad the listener is taken through the fascinating Oregon landscape. Indians cowboys golddiggers and hooded wagons will file past on this adventurous journey. The piece has some similarities with a soundtrack of a movie. Various melodies which could be the main themes of a movie pass the review.The piece begins in a slow movement introducing the first theme in minor. Then we hear in the following fast movement the trombones imitate the train whistling the steam-flute. We hear the characteristic minor theme again but now in different variants(also in major). The rythmic structure of western stile and rock succeed each other. This is leading to the slow movement where the signals of horns and trumpets introduce a wonderful vocal melody. After this characteristic melody the fast movement appears shortly again the trombones whistling the steam-flute again (now in major). We hear also some musical elements that plays a part in the following Presto. Barchanges jazzy chords interesting rhytmic patterns (with bongo) and an original theme are the characteristics of this Presto. After this the horns announce the last section of the piece. Interesting is the fact that we hear in this Allegro section a variant of the vocal melody in the slow movement. Also the Presto theme returns shortly followed by the Allargando which is a grand characteristic end of a soundtrack. The movie of our travelling fantasy has come to an end.

Waisenhaus Mass- Mozart had barely turned twelve when he composed and conducted his Missa solemnis in C minor K.139 to inaugurate a new orphanage on Vienna’s Rennweg in 1768. This astonishing early work adheres to the form of a Neapolitan cantata mass in which the separate movements (“Gloria” “Credo” etc.) are themselves made up of self-contained choruses ariosos and ensembles. This frequently heard Mass is characterized by a sharp contrast between its cheerful underlying C major mood and gloomy dramatic passages in the minor mode. Catalan Carol-This is a new setting of the text of a Catalan Christmas carol. While there are many meter changes the melody actually lilts along in alternating groups of two and three eighths and the smooth conjunct movement creates the feeling of a folksong. A Ballet for the Endangered Species- Dance of the Whale was commissioned by the Spanish music foundation Musica et Orbi at the instigation of its president Frank De Vuyst. It is part of a unique project which involved nine composers each writing a short movement describing ananimal of the composers’ choice to form a suite called Bestiarium . A consortium of bands around the world helped to fund the project and the world premiere of the suite took place in March 2013 in Medellín Colombia. Dance of the Whale uses the tenor instruments of the band to describe a lazy and graceful dance by a blue whale and is dedicated to endangered species around the world.

Moonlight Serenade is often said to be the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s signature tune capturing the very best of what it had to offer. This short work for clarinet and piano began as an unaccompanied melody which Bernstein copied from the wall of his periodontist friend Dr. Ron Odrich and later dished-up as a jazz clarinet melody for his friend who also happened to be a jazz clarinettist. Odrich and his composer partner Larry Fallon then used the tune as a basis for a very stylish work for clarinet and piano.
