French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Concerto for Bassoon 1963. As with his other wind compositions Être Ou Ne Pas Être for Bass Trombone or Tuba and 3 Trombones was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the ParisConservatoire and went on to become a high profile composer and conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican roots often incorporating themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother into his compositions. Être Ou Ne Pas Être is a highly unusual and modern work for Trombone quartet. The composition exploits tonality rhythm and structure amongst other aspects. However this Tomasi piece suitable for advanced Tuba and Trombone players provides an exciting alternative addition to the instrument's ensemble repertoire.

Havingpreviously set two sections of it as separate a cappella choruses and one fortwo countertenors andstrings I’ve long wanted to make a complete setting of the work and by arranging the countertenorpiece for a cappella chorus and setting the remaining verses as two more anthems for the same forces I’vecompleted the task. The five pieces can of course still be performed separately or brought togetheras a twenty-five minute setting of Roy Campbell’s translation from the original Spanish of this vivid andintense poem. The turbulence and intensity of a major wind storm is effectively recreated in Richard Saucedo's Of Gale Force Winds. Based around rhythmic figures that create a wind-like effect and combined with a playful melody the piecealternates between 6/8 and 9/8 staying rhythmically dynamic throughout. A very brief moment of repose hints at the period of calm that comes in the middle or eye of bigger storms. The fury of the storm then returnswith darker sonorities and increased energy as this descriptive work comes to an exciting conclusion. Dur: 4:00

They are caught andMargaret murders her children in a crime of passion sparing them from a life of slavery.
