Bogen fortaeller i sma episoder om Carl fra han som 6-arig far en lille violin at spille pa fordi han keder sig ved at ligge i sengen og til han som 18-arig kommer pa Musikkonservatoriet i Kobenhavn. Vi folger hans musikalske karriere fra hans forste optraeden som triangelspiller i faderens orkester til han bliver militaermusiker i Odense og begynder at spille trompet og basun. Bogen omhandler mange morsomme og spaendende episoder fra Carl Nielsens barndom i Norre-Lyndelse sammen med foraeldrene og de 11 soskende bl.a. hans venskab med Sophus hans forste job som gasedreng hans mode med traeskomageren hans skraek da grisen skulle slagtes og da han var ved at drukne i mergelgraven.
