Beethoven composed his Symphony No. 9 between 1822-24. The fourth movement is a theme and variations on Schiller’s poem Ode To Joy and included solo voices and choir. This arrangement includes the opening presentation of the theme and several variations capturing the spirit of the original work in an accessible grade 3 level for string orchestra. The parts are largely playable in first position with some shifting to intermediate positions for 1st Violin Cello and Bass. Duration 5:45.

Severe funding cuts in 2015 had a huge impact on Austria’s military bands. This piece is about the resurrection of these bands following a political decision in favour of the renowned military music organization structure in Austria. ‘The Rise of the Phoenix’ is an impressive piece full of bright colourful melodies and an incredible positive ambiance. There is a beautiful slow middle section with a touch of romance leading to a spectacular maestoso finale in which you can hear a hint of a famous military signal (as also used in Von Suppé’s 'Light Cavalry Overture'). A positive and challenging piece full of joy and colour!

Step by Step was commissioned by the Sony Concert Band to celebrate their 60th anniversary in 2018. Step by Step is an up-tempo concert march. The title was chosen as it has obvious associations with marching but also as a salute to the constant improvement and development that makes the products of Sony Corporation famous around the world. The suite describes 3 famous landmarks in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area: ‘Knole Park’ situated to the south-east of Sevenoaks. ‘The Chapel - Tonbridge School’: This movement centres around a hymn-like chorale depicting the years of worship that have taken place within the chapel and ‘The Vine Bandstand’ suggesting the type of music often played in bandstands. It is in march form but is not actually a march throughout veering off into other styles before ending emphatically.
