Children's Song Favorites is a collection of 75 songs for children of all ages most of them from the folk tradition. They have been collected over more than fifty years by a professional folk singer who is also a mother and grandmother. Each song has the melody line complete lyrics and suggested accompaniment chords for guitar or other instrument. Many of them are unusual— for example all 13 verses of The Three Blind Mice Hail to Britannia (a British nursery rhyme song) and for older children Chopo My Pony (a cowboy song) Old Thompson's Mule (of minstrel origin) and The Housewife's Lament. Facades was originally written in 1981 to accompany a scene in the cult film 'Koyaanishqatsi'. The scene of New York’s Wall Street on a Sunday morning was eventually cut from the film but the title stillrefers to the facades of buildings on Wall Street. American composer Philip Glass (b. 1937) is widely known as one of the most celebrated influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referredto as a minimalist though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ Facades later became movement no. 5 of Glassworks Glass’ ground-breaking studioalbum that has come to define his style. It was arranged for Flute and Piano by the composer in 2006.

This work was commissioned by the University of British Columbia through the gift of David Lemon. It was first performed on 11th May 1997 at the Chan Center University of British Columbia Vancouver Canada by Valdine Anderson(soprano) Linda Maguire (mezzo soprano) Paul Moore (tenor) and Kevin McMillan (baritone) with the Vancouver Bach Choir and the CBC Vancouver Orchestra conducted by the composer. Like Vaughan Williams in his Job: A Masque forDancing Davies was inspired in part by William Blake's 21 engravings for the Book of Job. His oratorio however is less dependent on finding parallels for Blake's visual details given the direct poetry in David Lemon'sadaptation of the Stephen Mitchell translation from the biblical original it is hardly surprising that the spotlight should be so much on Job's suffering litany. The baritone has the lion's share of the setting though the othersoloists occasionally reinforce his plea and chorale-like episodes universalize his predicament. Davies frames with work with two seminal plainsong-like passages; there is also plenty of dramatic contrast both within Job'smonologues and in the vivid orchestral writing for the smarmy Comforters the initially shrill God who finally appears out of a dazzling orchestral whirlwind and the animal life he uses to illustrate the wonders of creation to ahumbled Job.

You've never heard it like this before! A dramatic solo provides the powerful introduction before this hip spiritual arrangement kicks into a groovy jazz waltz. A call and response verse highlights individual sections of the choir (or soloists) and an ultra-cool transition builds and modulates into the final choral refrain. Great to perform with a jazz combo. Arranged for 2-part choir by Patsy Ford Simms and Andy Beck.

The colourful compelling starting theme forms the leitmotiv throughout this piece. It is followed by a very rhythmical part with a catchy melody that is literally and figuratively music to the ear. A slow almost meditative part follows with a beautiful alto saxophone solo that leads to an impressive chorale. The fast sections are once more repeated towards the end but in another form. A fantastic composition by Menno Bosgra!
