A work in five movements each characterizing a poem by Chaucer. 'Triton's Trumpets' acts as an overture to the suite of pieces is mainly rather rustic and as its title implies much of its music is in the nature of fanfares. Next is a haunting slow waltz then a very short and very vigorous fanfare. In the fourth movement 'The Sorrowful Knight' each instrument expresses its individual sorrow. Finally Chaucer himself chatters in a jaunty innocent style.

Manhã De Carnaval appeared as a principal theme in the 1959 Portuguese-language film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus). Manhã De Carnaval became one of the first compositions identified with Bossa Nova to gain popularity outside Brazil. The title was particularly popular in the United States where the song is considered to be one of the most important Brazilian Jazz/Bossa songs that helped establish the Bossa Nova movement in the late1950s.
