As the title suggests this opening work consists of a fanfare and a hymn. This work was written for the opening ceremony of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf (Allgäu Germany) and can be played in four different versions depending on your needs or the players available. You can use a complete version a short fanfare played just by trumpets (cornets) trombones and timpani a double fanfare (extended with tutti-band) or a fanfare version followed by the hymn. In 1880 Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert.

A fabulous composition by Austrian composer and innovator of the romantic art songs (or lieder) Franz Schubert. Fantaisie In F Minor isn't the most popular of Schubert's works but is often regarded as one of his finest in terms of both character and style. It is passionate melancholy and the simple repeated tune carries a weight of sadness. Originally for Piano four-hands Jeremoe Ducros has wonderfully arranged this work for two-hands Piano solo.

When it comes to flute music of the Baroque era the works of Bach and Handel are unsurpassed in musical stature as well as in recognition and popularity and thus it is easy to overlook the fact that many other composers of that same period also wrote attractive music for the instrument. As an example consider the introductory slow movement of Johann Christian Schickhard’s Sonata in a minor where over a descending chaconne bass the flute interweaves a rich variety of melodic phrases. This is just one of the musical surprises to be discovered in this multifaceted volume.
