The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims’ March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes which at the time made little sense to him. However he did notice that the bass line was similar to a “walking bass” line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn’s original bass line melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred yearslater he could have become one of our big band leaders!

Vocal Score- This is the Complete Vocal score of the entire opera with singing text in Italian and English. A beautiful imaginative opera and it is one of Verdi's most famous works and most successful opera. The premiere occurred on 19 January 1853 at the Teatro Apollo in Rome and was an enormous success. The appreciation of the new work increased with each performance. The third performance was the last that Verdi was contractually obliged to attend: at the end of that evening the audience presented Verdi with two laurel wreaths.

Vocal Score-Its first performance at the San Carlo theatre in Naples on 26th September 1835 an acclaimed success Lucia Di Lammermoor was a real triumph for Gaetano Donizetti . The Bergamasque composer - who had returned to Naples that year where he was hailed as a maestro - had met Salvadore Cammarano and they quickly struck up good artistic relations. On the inspiration of Walter Scott's 'The Bride Of Lammermoor' Cammarano wrote a fast-moving libretto typical of a romantic ballad with a strong formal structure and boosted by first class melody. The love story as described by the two authors is beautiful yet sad and tragic. Lucia takes on an almost uniquerole in Italian Opera; a heroine completely bereft of human passion apart from her total dedication to love. The romantic female character par excellence capable of bewitching even Madame Bovary and Anna Karenina.

The cantata “Ich Hatte Viel Bekümmernis” dates from around 1713 and was probably performed for the first time that year in the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle. Its assigning to the third Sunday after Trinity probably only occurred the following year. With its large-scale structure and strong emphasis on biblical texts it was extremely popular in the 19th century and remains one of Bach ’s best-known cantatas today.
