5 Capricci (First Edition)-On hearing Joseph Anton Steffan’s (1726–1797) numerous songs or piano works he can immediately be identified as an original precursor of Romanticism. His harmonically refined “Capricci” – whose tempi and metre often change – are particularly attractive although to date they have lain around in archives in manuscript form. Everest is the name of a restaurant on the 40th floor of a skyscraper in Chicago. In 2003 the composer Jacob de Haan had dinner there together with his publishers and other fellow composers. The idea of composing a march to honour the excellent cuisine the magnificent view of the skyline and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant arose during the visit. The results can be heard in this delightful and unusual work.

This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live have lived and will live in the US town of Algona who commissioned the work to celebrate it’s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums heavy brass) this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine.
