Contest March-Philip Sparke wrote this march for the famous brass band contest held ever year on Whit Friday in Oldham and Saddleworth. Given the competition’s long history (over 120 years) he consciously composed this piece in a very traditional march form. The title The Conqueror refers to Alexander the Great’s nickname as well as being something every band aspires to be!

Three Russian Dances-This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns but also familiar sounds. After the introduction a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy although during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) Norway’s most famous composer has written a lot of music which is definitely worth playing and listening to! Play Grieg features a selection of well-known and lesser-known works or themes. Since most of these were originally written for instruments other than the one for which they are intended in this volume things such as tempi have been carefully adapted from the original parts or pieces have been shortened to ensure playability.

King Arthur is a five-movement suite based on the famous Arthur ledged. It forms part of the ‘Easy Band 4’ series in which all pieces have ten-part instrumentation (+ percussion) so can be performed by bands who do not have a full compliment of players. Bring a little Arthurian magic to your concert with this easy and exciting suite.

While composing this beautiful chorale Hayato Hirose was inspired by the fond memory of the pre-marital days he spent with his beloved wife Minako.The chorale starts with gorgeous woodwinds after which the brass section is gradually added to enhance the atmosphere. The main theme is repeated and developed in several different keys in the middle section followed by the recapitulation and the romantic coda that concludes the work. Moment Musical gives any concert programme a touch of warmth and tenderness.

A Christmas Cantata- Born A King is brilliant unfolding of the Christmas story. The Cantata begins with a number of prophetic passages and proceeds through the main events of that glorious night. If in his concertos for solo instrument and orchestra Saint-Saëns freed himself from the Viennese classical model (reconfiguring it with originality but in the light certainly of the formal experimentations of Schumann and of Biedermeier virtuosity) in the Romance opus 37 and other works of similar form (opus 27 36 and 48) he adopted the Romantic ternary Liedform (A–B–A) – in particular that of Schumann’s Stücke and Mendelssohn’s Lieder ohne Worte – and transcended the idiomaticity of the respective solo instruments now interchangeable ad libitum (flute or violin in the case of opus 37) therebymaking the pieces more widely usable and emphasizing their cantabile quality. This is a comprehensive approach to the second third fourth and fifth positions for the violin. Accompanied by detailed notes and instructions for each position this book is largely devoted to mastering the third position. It builds a foundation for students interested in masterful violin playing and encourages them to study the higher positions further.

E-flat major- Many wholly new corrections in the solo and orchestral parts. Piano reduction with a separate solo part as was customary in Beethoven ’s day. With Beethoven ’s continuo figures for the first time in a modern edition. Beethoven ’s fifth and final Piano Concerto is at the same time the culmination of his efforts in this genre and a reflection of all his artistic skill and expertise. The surviving manuscripts provide a clear insight into his working methods and his intentions regarding the work’s performance. The editor Jonathan Del Mar has closely scrutinised the autograph solo piano part and reproduced Beethoven’ssophisticated performance instructions for the first time in a modern edition. Among other things this has special repercussions for the left-hand figured bass line of the piano part during the tutti passages. As with the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 to 4 the Piano reduction appears with a separate solo part containing all the information needed by the soloist to conduct the ensemble from the Piano.

Erbarme Dich mein Gott from St Matthew Passion- Have Mercy Lord from J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion is one of the most beautiful arias from the baroque period. In Philip Sparke’s arrangement it is envisaged that the soloists stand together as a group stage right while the other musicians stand behind to form the tutti group. This piece is easily playable for both the soloists and the band and will create a beautiful moment of reflection whether performed on the concert stage or in a church.

Motet for five-part mixed choir- All of Bach ’s six authenticated motets were written between 1723 and 1727 for St Thomas’ Church Leipzig where Bach was appointed as director of music in 1723. During this period Bach composed most of his cantatas and it seems likely that for ordinary Sunday services he used existing motets from the seventeenth century tradition reserving his own motet compositions for special occasions. Four of his six motets were written for the funeral services of prominent members of the St Thomas’ congregation. Jesu Meine Freude (BWV 227) the longest most musically complex and earliest of the six was written in 1723 for the funeralof Johanna Maria Käsin the wife of Leipzig’s postmaster. Jesu Meine Freude BWV 227 is a beautifully constructed motet for five-part mixed choir by J.S. Bach .
