Village Gossip is the first movement of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak ’s cycle ‘Five Choruses For Male Voice’. The cycle of five choruses is set toLithuanian folk texts translated by Frantisek Ladislav Celakovsky and is written for unaccompanied male choir (TTBB Voices). The title page of the autograph score bears the note: “Composed on the journey from Prague to Vienna 12thof December 1878”. The individual parts of the cycle present a vibrant palette of moods from the balladic ‘Dwellers by the Sea’ to the final light-hearted ‘The Sparrow’s Feast’. The songs’ melodies echothe spirit of folk songs and the composer used simple but colourful harmonies and chose a strophic form.

Baritone solo or small group; expressive a cappella arrangement of a traditional spiritual From the Mark Foster catalog here is an especially pictorial and dramatic spiritual for Holy Week. Craig Westendorf has chosen anexpressive melody to recall Christ's concern for His mother. It is direct and powerful without sentimentality. Sung a cappella with baritone soloist the repetitive use of the word nailin' beneath the second verse isparticularly effective. Take My Mother Home could be used within the context of the passion reading by liturgical churches and is also suitable for Lent or Holy Week. All congregations will find this poignant andunique anthem to be a dramatic and moving addition to worship.

This setting of the Te Deum was written for St Cecilia's day in 1694 almost exactly a year before the composer's death. Composed in a highly flamboyant style it was originally scored for adult and boy choirs soloists strings bass and trumpets but has been scored here for SSAATB soli SSATB chorus and Piano accompaniment. It was edited by the organist of Westminster Abbey J. F. Bridge for a bicentennial commemoration in 1895 at which time the 18th century changes were replaced and the original version restored. The Latin text was provided by the musicologist R. R. Terry. Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerousappointments at the Royal court and Westminster Abbey and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral ecclesiastical operatic theatrical incidental and chamber music were all enriched by his output.
