Composer and arranger Albert W Ketèlbey is now almost unknown except for his work Bells Across the Meadows but until the time of the Second World War he strode the country’s musical stage like a giant of light musical entertainment. In 1929 he was declared ‘Britain’s greatest composer’ according to the number of performances of his works. Over the course of his career he was a church Organist musical director at London’s Vaudeville Theatre editor to several music publishing firms and Music Director of the Columbia Gramophone Company.His most popular works appear to be a series of Orchestral tone poems like Sanctuary Of The Heart based on a verse from hisown poem In a Monastery Garden printed in the score.

Sinfonia Hungarica is a three-movement symphony that depicts the history of Hungary. All three movements were inspired by historical key figures wars and other important events from this country. This symphony is a celebration of Hungary’s millennium in 2001.The second movement focuses on ARPAD the actual founder of the Hungarian State. It starts with an atmospherical passage evoking his grandmother Emese who dreamt about his future destination. One of Arpad’s opponents the Bulgarian Prince Zalan was chased away after a fight. After this Arpad officially named the territory “Magyarorszag.”

Five years after the release of the monster album Thriller which sold a record-breaking 105 million copies worldwide up to this date this second single from the album Bad released in 1987 also peaked at number one on the Billboard chart. This song was performed during Michael’s first solo world tour that started from Japan (Korakuen Stadium) in September 1987. The short film directed by Martin Scorsese also generated great publicity. In particular the animated group dance scene in the subway made a huge impact on the viewers and distinguished Michael’s image. As the video depicts “bad” in this song’s lyrics indicate the kicking cool unruly living on thestreets. As the opening number Bad strikes out a course of slight-but-right edginess with its dynamically groovy arrangement that underscores the electric funk in the original tune. However if you by opera think of its dramatic type with people in one or more conflicts mutual and with themselves - well then Night of mankind probably has to reckon among another not yet categories genre.It may well be two named person that perform (Alice and Vilhelm) but the opera does not deal with their possible mutual tensions but instead of their common limitless intensity which first make them in harmony walk the dangerouspaths on which the enthusiasm lead them and afterwards divides them as now radically changed figures: from the individual woman to the war correspondent in demagogic - ecstatic outburst of feelings - from the mans human to the soldiers unhuman everyday. Alphamonic Overture is an opening piece that serves equally well at other points in a concert programme. This unique work is based on the syllables of the name of the orchestra: just as Ravel once wrote a piece using the letters of Haydn’s name Satoshi Yagisawa transformed ‘Alphamonic’ into ‘la-mi-si-la-la-fa-la-so-ti-do’ and employed this note row into the basis for the entire composition.

The title of this piece gives a clue as to how it came about: Jan de Haan took the setting of psalm 149 from the Geneva Psalter of 1562 and created from this simple beautiful melody a glorious lively opening work for concert band. So it was that from a psalm and an intrada (prelude) a Psaltrada was born - for you to begin your next concert in splendid fashion.
