Hypnotic Ciel Étoilé – it means ‘starry sky’ in French – uses the bass as a dark night of sound dotted with pointillist percussive sounds from the cymbals and crotales. The work is written in thirty-six bars each one a ‘star’ played very slowly and at varying speeds.Kaijai Saariaho is a contemporary Finnish composer living and working in Paris and considered to be part of the so-called ‘French Spectralist’ school of composition. Unlike many of herother works Ciel Étoilé has no electronic extensions but fully explores the multiple sonorities of the bass. She gained international renown for her first opera l’Amour du Loin and continues a prolific compositional life with awide range of international performances.

The Suite Hébraïque draws on traditional Jewish sources such as the sound of the shofar's call as Bloch explored his Judaic heritage. The first movement is forceful with barely repressed emotion. A march rhythm and a passionate theme from the viola characterize the second movement titled Processional. The finale Affirmation opens and closes with a full-throated theme over a dance-like lilting rhythm framing a sweet graceful central section. Includes parts for Viola and Violin.

I Will Bow And Be Simple from 'Three Shaker Tunes' arranged by Betty Jacobson for SSA choir with Piano accompaniment. ' The form of worship practiced by the Shakers in New England has been a subject of curiosity for more than a century and a half. The Shakers originated in the English Quaker Church and came to America in 1774 and settled in New England and in New York state. They still exist in some communities in these territories. The Shaker songs took on a lively spontaneity and a cross between Quaker orderliness and wild abandonment that characterised the rituals of the French prophets from whom the Shakers distantlystemmed. The Shakers exercised in dancing shaking and whirling until they went into trances and 'recieved songs as gifts.' The songs are derived from 'spirit manifestations' and all have individual types of rhythms and texts.' - Edward D. Andrews from 'Shaker Songs' The Musical Quarterly October 1937
