Violin 2- Claudio Monteverdi’s “Vespro della Beata Vergine” is without doubt one of the most popular sacred works of the 17th century. Apart from the many available recordings it is frequently performed in its entirety or in parts. The Urtext edition of this well-known work has unusual origins. It originated from a graduate seminar at the University of North Texas under the direction of the Monteverdi specialist Hendrik Schulze. The result is an edition which combines the latest in musicological research specifically with the needs of the performer in mind. This has led for instance to a divergent evaluation of the “Lauda Jerusalem” oriented towardsperformance practice with numerous additional accidentals and a new interpretation of the melodic variants from the different part books. These new musical and performance practice insights make a modern interpretation of this 400-year-old work possible. Written for a performance in 1759 it combines festive trumpet sounds with moving chorale settings. Telemann has used his musical resources with moderation and restraint allowing the chorus to appear at the central passages in both sections and painting an unobtrusive pastoral background for the Christmas setting. This spectacular three-part concerto (Contrasti Romanza and Fugato) for euphonium and grand brass-band orchestra by Bert Appermont was composed upon request by the Swiss euphonium virtuoso Ueli Kipfer who created it in November 2004 with the Schweizer Armee Spiel conducted by Jan Cober. The composer was inspired more by its mood than the analysis of works by Mahler and Rachmaninov. This concerto which is quite demanding for the soloist and a challenge for the orchestra is probably one of the most innovative works by Bert Appermont to date. Both themes are orchestrated differently and each instrumental group takes turns playing. This makes the piece extremely colourful. At the end both themes are combined with each other.
