One hundred years after the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in 1886 John Williams was commissioned to compose a fanfare for the re-dedication ceremony. At this event Mr. Williams led the Boston Pops Orchestra in the firstperformance of this work which the composer described as a group of American airs and tunes of my own invention.

The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect Excellence Friendship Courage Equality Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements so four of them had to double up – Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. The Marbled Midnight Mile is a companion to Bryant's earlier works Dusk and First Light - the three of them together forming a loosely-related night cycle. The title evokes an extended journeythrough the myriad wandering thoughts that occur in the solitude of night. The music makes only modest technical demands of the ensemble but is a perfect vehicle to expand the band's musical maturity and sensitivity. Dur: 8:00(Grade 4)
