This String Quartet has some technical difficulties particularly for the first violinist but the musical result is worth the effort and players familiar with Beethoven's quartets will enjoy playing it. It is one of three Hummel opus 30 quartets published by SJ Music. All three are classical in style and pleasurable to listen to and play and many would say that they have been unjustly neglected. Johann Nepomuk Hummel was a Hungarian pianist conductor and composer born in Pozsony (now Bratislava) in 1778. He died in Weimar in 1837. Mozart heard him play aged seven in Vienna and was so impressed that he offered him lessons and took him to live with him for the next two years. As an adult in Vienna he became good friends with Beethoven.

Some of the most beautiful music from Mozart's operas is to be found in Così fan Tutte. Now flautists can extend their repertoire and explore these glorious moments. These duet arrangements from the late 18th and early 19th centuries of Mozart's operatic highlights have served as a basis for modern-day editors. Whilst retaining many aspects of the original flute arrangements Mozart's own intentions with regard to the relevant orchestral settings have been considered and respected. Suitable for intermediate-level flautists these duets may well introduce players to the music of Mozart. This romance for clarinet is an important work because it is the composer's first attempt at writing a concert piece with orchestra. Richard Strauss wrote it in 1879 for a fellow pupil. In a letter to Ludwig Thuille he remarked: 'I have been very industrious - maybe I have told you already - composing a romance in E flat major for clarinet and orchestra which has turned out quite well; the continuous theme turns after the cantilena into a 6-part orchestral fugato.' 12 Balladen für Gitarre solo-The Letters for You by Giuseppe Di Girolamo are perfectly suited to the guitar as an instrument. They contain a wealth of exuberant melodies which are always enjoyable to play not only because the tempi are never over-demanding and the left-hand fingerings are almost naturally logical (fingerings are only indicated where this is not the case). No; the real reason why these pieces are such a joy to play is that they make any guitar sound simply beautiful! Players with pre-intermediate skills and beyond will find them motivating and satisfying. These pieces are also very valuable in terms of guitar didactics because they directly challenge the player to develop themelodic flow. The Letters for You will teach the player how to make the guitar sing! (Michael Koch)

Four Latin motets (1991) for mixed choir SSATB (SSA) by Per Norgard . Edited by Ivan Hansen . 1 Ne obsurdescas mihi (SSA/SAT) 2 Ad te Domine clamabo (SSATB) 3 Quam dilecta tabernacula tua (SSA/SAT) 4 Exultavit in Deum (SSATB) Programme note All four motets are based on the first motets simple pentatonic initial motif. Like the polarities of the hymn texts between lamentation and jubilation the motif appears in various disguises from a gloomy Japanese (death-) mode (first and second motet) to the lighter celebratory forms inthe familiar Chinese pentatonic scale and the Indonesian pelog scale (third and fourth motet). The mood-creating scales weave (like the text sections) in and out of each other ; just a few changes in notes change grief to joy from idyll to catastrophe. The latin version of the motets (originally with Danish text 1991) was made in 1998 by Per Norgard and Ivan Hansen. Ivan Hansen
