Timeless Cornish Melodies Cooked Up For Hungry Brass Players- As I sit myself down to write this brief foreword I ask myself can there be music more stirring than these old Cornish folk melodies? Though not Cornish myself (I confess to being born a little further up the road in Bristol) I feel I have spent sufficient time in these 'ere parts to resonate with the sturdy brass band tradition that continues to permeate this incomparably beautiful rugged county. One can almost detect a French 'accent' when listening to the piano music of Debussy and likewise speaking as a lapsed brass player there is undoubtedly something of the Cornish twang about Trelawny when played on a cornet or euphonium. Then again one gets a different yet entirely convincing effect upon hearing these melodies rendered on woodwind instruments; hence with a little gamesmanship on my part I am pleased to see my collection of these fifteen delectable ditties come to fruition in the form of arrangements for treble clef brass instruments (in B flat and E flat) Trombone and Tuba (bass clef) Horn in F Flute Clarinet and Bassoon. While many will find themselves humming the likes of Going up Camborne Hill Lamorna or The Helston Furry Dance even before they have turned to the first page - for these are indelibly intertwined with Cornish culture - I wonder if I might draw your attention to The Cornish Squire The Pool of Pilate and Cold Blows the Wind Today Sweetheart which are quite simply sublime melodies perhaps needing that extra bit of help in bringing them to mind nowadays. In the best tradition of musical hand-me-downs Cornish folk music works equally ideally sung and played and only by doing so on a regular basis can such traditions hope to continue forward with vigour and authority. A legitimate way of achieving this is to revitalise the harmonic scheme of these ancient tunes and bring them up to date for a modern audience; after all it was such an approach that fuelled the imagination of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan

Score for String Quartet. Commissioned by the BBC Radio for the Proms concerts 2010. Dedicated to the Meta4 Quartet. Jouni Kaipainen's String Quartet No. 6 'The Terror Run' Op. 92 . Commissioned by the BBC Radio for the Proms concerts 2010. Dedicated to the Meta4 Quartet . Parts available: WH31197A Programme note: My former experience in writing string quartets has made me used to the idea that a piece of mine in this genre lasts close to half an hour and consists of several movements with different characters. This time the commission clearly stated a duration of 12 minutes and this naturally brought about lots of thinking and orientating. Eventually I luckily found out that I actually can alter mybasic string quartet philosophy so that such a short piece became an existing option. In the music itself there is nothing very much to explain. The quartet is for the most part quite lively flowing music in fast tempi. In the very beginning there is something haunting in the atmosphere but soon joyful for the most part delicately light at times maybe also dance-like characters take over. But in terms of dramaturgy the music has a tendency to grow more weighty and harsh and these quasi-violent elements gradually threaten the sunny unproblematic flow. Closer to the end we come to a point where nothing is easy anymore. This brings about a slow section of quite different nature and after that the former hilarious swing tries to make a comeback - but does not really succeed. The run goes on but the overtones are now more shadowy and the mood on the scary side. The subtitle comes from the novel The Camomile Lawn (1984) by Mary Wesley of which Ken Taylor made a wonderful TV series adaptation for Channel 4 (1992) where a marvellous casting of great actors supports the colourful beautiful and delightful story. In this novel young Sophie (gorgeously played by the 10-year-old Rebecca Hall) has eagerly waited for her older cousins to arrive to her aunt's house at the

Schumann’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A Minor Op. 54 is fine example of Romanticism and has a dynamic mood like much of his work. There is a sober atmosphere though dignified melody runs throughout but overall a unified and structured piece that broke away from the trend for virtuosic displays. Completed in 1845 when he appended two movements to the revised Fantasie; it is one of a handful of larger works by Schumann. The finished concerto premiered on New Year's Day of 1846 by the composer's wife and pianist Clara Wieck Schumann. Eulenberg's celebrated and highly authoritative miniature score is the definitive reference source for study performancepreparation or simply for those with a love of the great orchestral works.

Looking On Darkness for Accordion solo was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2000. Programme note: It is in the attempt to recreate a lost world without any illusion of its feasibility that we find the Danish composer Bent Sørensen's beautiful and melancholic music. Sørensen one of the most frequently performed contemporary Scandinavian composers has taken the title Looking on Darkness from Shakespeare's Sonnet No. 27. The thematic and intellectually clearly constructed form in which the inherent emotion is centrally placed and which characterises the sonnet also forms the basis of Sørensen'scomposition which is dedicated to Frode Haltli. As in Shakespeare's sonnet the past memory arises in Sørensen's music as it were out of nothing out of the darkness the silence; the concrete rattle of the accordion buttons and the sensitive dripping notes in the opening section vibrate on the borderline between the concrete and the hereafter. Loss and mourning for that which is lost and will never come again flow into the fleeting and poetic tones and meld together; the music oscillates lingers holds tightly to the absence slackens its grip tries again moves carefully onwards like the fragmentary memories in Samuel Beckett's late prose before the sorrowful voice of the piece just as beautiful and unobtrusive withdraws again and leaves us to the silence to what used to be.
