Set here for Violin and Piano this piece comes from The Gadfly Ballet suite. Claudio S Grafulla was born on the Spanish island of Minorca in 1818 and emigrated to the United States in 1838. Although he was a composer of many original works the one that is still regarded as one of the finest marches ever written is his Washington Grays March. This arrangement strives to recreate the original lost version written for an American Civil War brass band.

Best known for his award-winning musical theatre writing (Parade The Last Five Years) Jason Robert Brown has arranged this suite with his usual flair. In three movements: I. S'vivon al Hanisism II. Mi Yemalel III. Ma'oz Tsur.

This rhapsody reflects the four seasons combined with the natural scenery that characterises the city of Québec and its surrounding region. Autumn is depicted with hunting horns playing in the forest followed by a pastoral melody principally in the woodwinds. Winter in the mountains is poetic and romantic. Spring arrives with a frolicsome and playful theme mirroring the start of new life. Soon everything flowers lushly and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.

This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991 this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan) this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction played by the brass instruments a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme played by brass and percussion a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this Centennial Prelude isn't a really demanding piece it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

This work Trio Rhapsody For Two Violins And Viola was written in 1928 by Frank Bridge. This work of the English composer and viola-player is now beginning to enjoy some favour not least through the fact that he was the teacher of Benjamin Britten.
